The term "HUMMERS" originated in 1991 while the church was worshiping in the Cooper's Sales Office then located on Loch Lomond. A Valentine dinner party was planned by the Fellowship committee to be held in the newly constructed Highlands Clubhouse. Several of the men were Barbershop singers and they decided to "serenade" the women as surprise entertainment. The first "concert" consisted of about eight voices (some could actually sing - others could even read music!). The results were appreciated and the "group" was invited to entertain on several subsequent occasions. By this time they were dubbed the name "HUMMERS" which is short for Highlands United Methodist Men. The nickname has since been identified with most men's activities, particularly the Monday golf. "HUMMERS" golf hats have been around for many years and are well recognized in the village. The present golf group originally met every Saturday morning at the Highlands course and played the back nine. Teams of four were selected by the flip of a tee. As the population increased and group play became regulated, we adopted the short name "HUMMERS" for easy identification and scheduling,
That is the story of the HUMMERS
